Steam & Boiler Systems

Complete steam plant engineering and construction — boiler replacement, deaerator design and construction, steam drums, feedwater systems, and combustion ducting.

Steam & Boiler Systems

Full Steam Plant Scope

Grey Engineering Enterprises executes complete steam plant projects: steam boiler replacement, deaerator design and construction, steam drum replacement, boiler feed water pump systems, blowdown systems, and insulated flue gas ducting. We carry the project from heat balance and equipment specification through demolition, rigging, installation, and startup.

Boiler Feed Water Systems Done Right

Feedwater reliability makes or breaks a steam plant. We engineer BFW pump installations with proper suction hydraulics, NPSH margins, and pipe support arrangements verified by stress analysis. At Climax Molybdenum in Iowa, our flow studies and pipe stress analysis eliminated historic BFW pump vibration and flow problems as part of a full steam plant renewal.

Ducting, Stacks, and Insulation

Our scope includes combustion air and flue gas ducting design and fabrication, stack connections, expansion joints, and complete insulation and jacketing systems — engineered for thermal movement and built to survive the elements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Steam & Boilers

What does a complete steam plant renewal involve?

A complete steam plant renewal typically includes steam boiler replacement or retube, deaerator design and construction, steam drum replacement, boiler feed water pump system upgrades, blowdown system modifications, flue gas ducting and stack connections, and new insulation and jacketing systems. Grey Engineering Enterprises executes all of these scopes under a single EPC contract, from engineering and procurement through construction and startup.

What causes boiler feed water pump vibration and how is it resolved?

BFW pump vibration is most commonly caused by insufficient NPSH available, piping resonance, inadequate pipe support near the pump suction or discharge, or hydraulic instability in the system. Grey Engineering resolves BFW pump vibration through a combined approach: hydraulic flow studies to verify NPSH margins and system resistance curves, followed by pipe stress analysis to identify resonant support configurations and specify corrective support changes. At Climax Molybdenum in Iowa, this approach eliminated chronic BFW pump vibration that had persisted for years.

What is a deaerator and how does it affect steam plant reliability?

A deaerator removes dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide from boiler feedwater. Without proper deaeration, dissolved gases cause oxygen pitting and carbonic acid corrosion in boilers, steam drums, and feedwater piping — leading to premature failure. A properly designed and maintained deaerator is one of the most important reliability investments in a steam plant. Grey Engineering designs, fabricates, and installs deaerators to ASME Section VIII, including all piping, controls, and insulation.
