Project Overview

Engineering the existing plant from the ground up

The McIntosh, Alabama project begins where most engineering firms cannot — with a complete, accurate picture of what is already there. Grey Engineering performed a full-facility 3D laser scan, capturing every pipe, vessel, structural member, and instrument with millimeter precision. That scan data became the foundation of an intelligent Plant3D 3D model that drives every downstream deliverable.

From the 3D model, we are updating the facility P&IDs to reflect current as-built conditions and proposed modifications, performing civil and structural engineering for new equipment and platforms, and delivering electrical and instrumentation/controls design — all coordinated through a single integrated model.

As the lead engineering firm, Grey Engineering provides a single point of accountability across all disciplines — eliminating the coordination gaps that arise when multiple firms divide the scope.

01

3D Laser Scanning

Full facility 3D laser scan of the existing plant — capturing as-built piping, equipment, structural steel, and civil conditions with millimeter accuracy. Scan data registered and processed into a complete point cloud model used as the basis for all engineering deliverables.

02

Plant3D 3D Project Model

Construction of a complete 3D intelligent plant model in AutoCAD Plant3D using the laser scan point cloud as the reference. All existing and new piping, equipment, nozzles, and supports modeled to design specifications — enabling clash detection, isometric extraction, and accurate material takeoffs.

03

P&ID Update & Development

Full review and update of existing Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) to reflect current plant conditions and proposed modifications. New P&IDs developed for added systems, with instrument index and line list updates coordinated with the 3D model.

04

Civil & Structural Engineering

Civil and structural engineering for new equipment foundations, structural steel framing, platform and access design, and civil site work. All structural calculations performed by a licensed Professional Engineer and sealed for permitting and construction.

05

Electrical & Instrumentation/Controls

Electrical engineering and I&C design for process control upgrades, motor control, instrumentation loop sheets, and conduit and cable routing. Coordination with the Plant3D model ensures accurate routing and clash-free installation.

The Integrated Engineering Advantage

One model. One firm. Every discipline coordinated.

Scan-to-Model Accuracy

The 3D laser scan captures existing conditions with sub-millimeter accuracy, eliminating the field measurement errors that cause costly rework during construction.

Clash-Free Design

Building all disciplines — piping, structural, electrical — inside a single Plant3D model means clashes are resolved on screen, not in the field.

P&IDs That Match Reality

P&IDs updated from the 3D model and field verification reflect what is actually installed — not what was originally designed 20 years ago.

Coordinated I&C

Instrument locations, conduit routing, and control system design are coordinated directly with the 3D model, ensuring accurate loop sheets and installation drawings.

PE-Sealed Deliverables

All civil, structural, and process engineering calculations are performed and sealed by a licensed Professional Engineer for permitting and construction.

Single Point of Accountability

As lead engineering firm across all disciplines, Grey Engineering eliminates the coordination gaps that arise when multiple firms divide the scope.
